The surface is a bit worn, and rough, mostly from the awesomely warm winter we had that afforded a significant amount of good weather for playing, and ample conditions for weeds to crop up.
The city will maintenance the surface, i'm certain, as soon as they can get to it. They kept it in good condition last year.
Its a small town, but they take great pride in the Riverfront Park. Nothing done by campground staff, just let it blast. I would be tempted to try another campground in this area if coming through again. This place is way overpriced for what you get. Right on the interstate, noise is constant. No hard surfaces or grass, only gravel. We've stayed in much nicer places and paid way less. OK for an overnight stop but we won't be back.
Moderately spacious level sites with easily accessible hookups. Our surge protector tripped on low voltage several times due to low voltage. Desk clerk stated it was due to Edison lowering voltage in San Bernardino. Calico Ghost town is a nice touristy visit. Gas at Chevron was a dollar more per a gallon than the station on the other side of freeway underpass. Pet area has no shade, so caution. Ground was over deg. Adequate for overnight, depending on temperature.
If you do not need to go outside your unit, can be fine for overnight. I would not pay extra for an upgraded site, since it was too hot to be outside. Propane service required calling in to schedule someone to be at fill station. As others have said, this park is okay for an overnight stop. We appreciated the trees at our site that offered some shade from the heat, and the sites were long and wide enough to be reasonable.
The price is very high for the location. The wifi was iffy - it usually didn't work for my iPad, but did for my husband's. If you're coming from I, go straight under the I freeway and turn left on the second frontage road. Don't follow your gps and turn left on the first frontage road because you'll have to go 2 miles to the next overpass and 2 miles back!
The office has a few grocery items which are expensive as you'd expect. They had frozen moon pie ice cream sandwiches worth getting. Calico did not sound like a great idea on a very hot day so decided not to go. Not too much else in area. Be sure to make a reservation - this park gets pretty crowded, even mid-week see above. Go to Peggy Sue's restaurant, nearby, at least once during your stay.
Barstow is basically the middle of nowhere so the food is poor and there's not much to do. If you fancy a long drive down a dirt road, Rainbow Basin, just northwest of Barstow is an interesting place to visit and it also has dry camping. There is a ghost town near by, several gas stations, and places to eat. Barstow is very close as well. Calico Ghost Town is a neat trip and very close by. Make sure you pay the extra 2.
